Autumn Renfro is a widow, and now an orphan. The child of Hollywood star Danica McCaul and famous historical novelist Zane McCaul, is walking in her late mother's own footsteps. Autumn has lost her husband to an auto accident; recently her mother, Dannie, passed from a heart attack. Five years earlier Dannie moved to the tiny town of Cranky Otter, Arkansas, and opened an antique store. Now Autumn has left home in Chicago to reopen the store.

On her first morning in the store, she encounters a sexy hunk named Brann Havelock, who unfortunately doesn't possess an equally appealing personality. Instead, he is abrupt and dismaying, a guy with a real chip on his shoulder, and he works as point scout for a development corporation hoping to turn the little town into a modern mall venue. The odd fact is that he and Autumn seem to have some kind of inexplicable ethereal link, as if they'd known each other well before. Autumn meets her across-the-street-store-owner neighbor, Kevin Channing, who is a photographer and sole proprietor of Cranky Otter's Chamber of Commerce. He is immediately attracted to Autumn and sets out to court her. A pleasing personality and a likeable character is Kevin, but bland compared to sexy Brann.

Autumn's days are full of surprises. Suddenly she's discovering an amazing talent for the paranormal gift of psychometry. Certain objects she picks up, both ancient and modern, reveal glimpses of the present and past to her. It's not like watching a movie: she feels the emotions, and at times she looks in the mirror, or at someone, and sees a completely different individual. All sorts of new possibilities seem to be opening up in the midst of her driving need to assuage her grief, and to make the store a viable income proposition.

Autumn in Cranky Otter is a fascinating story, revealing author C. J. Winters' excellent grasp of character. All the main characters are so well developed, the reader feels as if she or he could turn and speak to them. That is all too rare in fiction. The paranormal element is woven in convincingly, and again, the reader will empathize all the way. This is the fourth in the inestimable Cranky Otter Series, and every reader will be convinced to pick up the earlier installments as well, and will eagerly anticipate further entries. Autumn in Cranky Otter is a winner!
