Scott Reneau was a Yankee who quit his job in Portland, Maine, headed south, and got a job as a reporter for a small town newspaper. He proceeded to blow the lid on a popular local good ol' boy dirty politician. His boss was none too pleased when Scott's story became the talk of the town and Scott was demoted to grunge work that any first-year student could do. He was also landed with community events, and something called the Watermelon Riot of thirty-two years before. So, what was important about a watermelon riot that happened in the late twenties or early thirties, and how did the whole town riot? Leaving the news office, he headed for the town librarian and all around busybody, but the bright blue-haired lady was suddenly tight lipped. One thing Scott prided himself on was getting his story one way or the other—but that was before he realized the riot had occurred in the 1750's!
Michelle Strahan was letting a pair of sexy buns and eyes do her in yet again. She thought that she had learned her lesson when she fled Los Angeles. Another man had taken advantage of her there, and as a result she had fled back to her grandparents and intentionally made herself look hideous. When she takes pity on a Yankee after no one will talk to him, and helps him to uncover a dirty politician, she ends up in trouble—covering dog parades! Michelle is already suffering. It was her great grandmother who caused the infamous Watermelon Riot, and riotous songs are played at the yearly festival in remembrance of her.
Melissa Glisan spins a totally outrageous story of a woman in the seventeen fifties who went after her slow-moving man by erotically eating watermelon in front of the town men. When there was no more of the slurpy fruit in her wagon, it caused a riot! Scott and Michelle find out that they have much in common as he uncovers why there was a riot. As Scott unravels the story, and discovers the very gorgeous and real Michelle, they make their own riot in a watermelon patch! The Watermelon Riot is a quick and fun read that makes sense in a quirky way. How many men can watch a siren sensuously caress a succulent melon and not "react"? |
