| Ned Deklin is the doorman at MaeBelle’s speakeasy. Generally, his job is to let the right people in and throw out the troublemakers. This suits Ned fine since he has secrets he keeps and his job doesn’t demand anything from him. However, when Frank Endmon walks in, he turns Ned’s world upside down – especially when he invites Ned into his bed. But as Frank begins to investigate the murders of three people connected with the speakeasy, everything becomes more complicated – especially when MaeBelle joins Ned and Frank in their erotic escapades… Just like the cover suggests, Carry On by Treva Harte delivers a romance with a definite noir flavor. Treva Harte paints such a vivid picture that you feel the undercurrents of danger and excitement that surround the era of prohibition as if you were part of the story. Ned is a charming character who has insecurities due to his large size, youth and secret life as a werewolf. Frank serves as a stark contrast to Ned, as Frank comes across as a superbly confident man who goes after what he wants – while protecting his heart by denying his emotions. MaeBelle is the stereotypical ethereally sexy dame who turns everyone’s head – including the villain. The shapeshifter aspect of the story serves as a backdrop for the romance rather than being an integral part of the plot. Also, some of the romantic dynamics between MaeBelle, Ned and Frank need to be inferred as part of the emotional connection between them is not clearly explored. The erotic encounters of the trio are lava hot, and they will leave you panting for breath. Carry On is a dark and gritty tale that will capture your attention and immerse you into a another time where all the rules are different. |
