Clay, a UFC headliner, is famous in the sport and well known in his hometown. Melody is running from an abusive ex-husband and has settled down in this small town. She’s trying to scrape out a living as a waitress in the town’s only diner. While working during the Thanksgiving holiday, Melody does something no one has ever done for Clay, she offers him a piece of pie for no other reason than it’s the holiday. This selfless act begins a courtship between Clay and Melody. Will Clay, a man who makes his living with his fists be able to convince Melody a man doesn’t need to use his size to intimidate someone before Melody’s ex-husband makes it impossible for her to learn the lesson and live? Defying the Odds by Kele Moon is the first novel in the Battered Hearts series. I found this to be an emotional story with a side of heat. Clay is a man who understands how to use his body in his sport but is uncomfortable in his skin outside of the cage. I loved how this big bear of a man, who had more money than he knew what to do with, was unsure of himself. He had a tough upbringing and with his fame, his experience with the opposite sex is somewhat limited to belt bunnies. As his relationship with Melody progresses, he learns what a real relationship should look and feel like. I loved seeing his self confidence grow as he began to see himself through Melody’s eyes. I also loved Melody, she was down but definitely not out. During her marriage she was a victim, but she pulled herself out of the deadly situation and was able to see beyond Clay’s job into the shy man who he is. Clay’s support and love helped her remember that a real man doesn’t need to use his fists to get his way. Ms. Moon crafted a well written story which was emotional without being overdone. I was invested and rooting for these two characters to have their happily ever after together. The chemistry and passion was believable and sweet. While this was my first experience with Ms. Moon’s writing, it definitely will not be my last. |
