Victor is a gifted cop with highly psychic talents. In his futuristic society, his talents are essential for law enforcement, but when not controlled could drive him to insanity. Anti-psychoactive medication is the usual order of the day. His "normal" partner, Maurice, has recently retired and takes Victor out for a fishing day, Victor's first time ever. Victor is gay, and very much in the closet, due to the nature of his career. The first partner assigned to him after Maurice's retirement turned out to be an off-the-charts psychic herself, and is now undergoing training at the Institute. His new partner is as yet a cipher, almost too friendly for Victor not to be suspicious. The fishing trip would have gone more smoothly if Victor hadn't suddenly seen dead faces all throughout the river, which could be indications of actual deaths, or just his visions. Then while falling asleep, the TV static begins trying to communicate. The first case Victor and his new partner Roger {who really is too sweet to be true} are assigned is a cold case involving a man who first confessed to a series of child murders and then recanted. Only one of the bodies had been found, but apparently the ghosts are ready for vengeance, now that Victor is tuning in to them.
Jordan Castillo Price has a strong grasp of the futuristic society which forms the basis for the PsyCop series. Victor is an appealing and likeable fellow who strives to cope with the lifelong burden of his gifts, and in the meantime to find a way to merge his own sexual preferences and desires with the need to conform in a rigid environment, where he is already considered "different." The m/m intimacy is well-done and should not be offensive to the majority of readers. For those looking for something new and different in futuristic paranormal, Criss Cross is the way to go. |
