Prudence Youlgrave has been living in poverty after sacrificing comforts and necessities so her brother could become a lawyer.  Her expectations that he would take her in after their mother’s death have not been met.  When Prudence is accosted by thieves near her impoverished dwelling, Catesby Burgoyne comes to her rescue, gallant and audacious.  They share an embrace and a chaste kiss that both remember long after.  Under pressure from her brother and his well-to-do wife, Prudence agrees to marry a most despicable man.  But just as the wedding is about to take place, Catesby comes to the rescue once again and marries her himself to save her from a life of probable misery and abuse.  All would be well for the adventurous two but Catesby’s brother has died leaving Catesby to inherit the title of Earl of Malzard and Prudence has become a most unlikely countess.  Not only must the newlyweds cope with unexpected wealth and the pressing duties that come with it, but danger lurks in every shadow as a consequence of Prudence’s thwarted fiancé.  The marriage forged on impulse must now sustain them as they turn to one another in trust and love.

An Unlikely Countess is filled with wit and banter between Catesby and Prudence.  Jo Beverly creates a story filled with intelligence and tenderness intertwined with courage and bravado.  The reader knows from the very start that these endearing characters are meant for each other.  Such flawed and amusing characters force the reader to cheer them on and hope that everything will work out for them in the end.  Once again, Ms. Beverly has put together an amazing story that will not let the reader go until the last page has been read.

An Unlikely Countess is a book I could not put down.  I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a story rich in historical detail that is filled with adventure, exciting characters, and danger.  Catesby and Prudence have hearts of gold and do not forget their friends, no matter how low those friends may be in the social order of the day.  Their genuine humanity only makes them all the more appealing.  Catesby is not only courageous but he has the great capacity for love and fairness and he is so very clever.  I hope Ms. Beverly intends to write a future novel with Perry, Catesby’s friend, as the central character.  I fell in love with him along the way.
