Isabelle Weston has the great fortune of being born into a large, loving and financially secure family. As a child, she falls in love with her brother’s best friend, James Sheffield. James is attracted to Izzie but his life’s circumstances, the death of his mother and his baby sister and the animosity of his grandfather, have led him to fear love and marriage. As Isabelle grows into adulthood, her feelings for James only deepens and this very determined young lady who pulls out all the stops to win James’s heart and have him for her very own. As might be expected, the course of true love has a very rocky road ahead for Izzie. Promise Me Tonight was funny, clever and frustrating as, I am sure, Sarah Lindsey intended it to be. The reader cannot help but love the wide-eyed optimist, Isabella, who is so willing to open her heart again and again to a broken and obstinate man. Ms. Lindsey creates a dark, brooding and almost brutal hero in James Sheffield. One minute the reader is brought close to tears for the suffering James has endured, and the next minute there is an urge to want to slap him upside the head for his self-centeredness and his sometimes cruel and biting words. Even though the letters from Isabella at the beginning of every chapter were a little distracting, I loved this story and the characters are imprinted in my heart forever. Anyone who loves an historical romance, will be delighted to read the wonderful story of Promise Me Tonight. |
