Assistant D.A. Sara Hughes has worked too hard to see Jeff Codger go unpunished for raping two young women and possibly murdering one of them. She needed Codger’s boss, strip club owner Simon Daniels, to sign his affidavit linking Codger to the rapes as well as answer some questions about the murder. Otherwise, she’d be home on a Friday night, not pulling into a seedy backwoods strip bar advertising Girls, Girls, Girls! What she didn’t count on was overhearing a conversation incriminating Daniels in the murder she’d thought Codger had looked good for. And she definitely hadn’t counted on having to run for her life.
Bounty hunter and Navajo shaman Neol Pallaton was at the bar to pick up his skip, Jeff Codger, but instead of coming away with Codger, he found himself rescuing and going on the run with the saucy district attorney who’d prosecuted many of his skips. Sara’s beauty and feisty dedication to her work had drawn his attention for months. She stirred him in ways no other woman ever had, but he was in no position to become involved with her. Once she knew what he was, he knew she’d shrink back from him in fear, so he’d left her alone. Until he heard her screams and knew her life was in danger. He hadn’t expected her to recognize him in his fur. According to his late grandfather, only his true mate would be able to do such a thing, but Sara wasn’t of The People. How was that possible?
With Daniels, Codger and their hired guns hot on their trail, Neol and Sara make a run for safety through the woods of Southwest Oregon. Their pursuers keep them running by day, but at night, the sparks of passion ignite into scorching flames neither one is able or willing to extinguish. Neol’s honor and integrity all but rip away Sara’s preconceived notion about the kind of man who becomes a bounty hunter. When the tables turn, and their pursuers become Neol’s prey, she comes to accept that no one can protect her like a medicine man who can call more than just a cougar from his bag of ancient Navajo magic.
Set in Western Oregon, Southern California, Nevada and Arizona, Tales of the Red Moon Clan is a suspenseful paranormal romance that takes you on a thrilling, fast-moving ride that just gets better and better with each turn of the page. Although this book appears to be Cherie De Sues’s first published work, her setting descriptions are well done and easy to imagine. For the most part, her plot flows nicely, with lots of dramatic and highly inventive twists and turns, while keeping the romantic flavor. However, I do have to say that it was a stretch for me to accept Sara recognizing Neol in his fur by just the color of his eyes. It was the one element of this otherwise captivating story that Ms. De Sues didn’t quite pull off.
Maggie is realistic and likeable as a down-to-earth woman who can hold her own through some difficult and dangerous situations. Neol is my fantasy man, with his awesome good looks, courage and devotion to the woman he loves, especially considering he’s not all that certain that Sara will be able to accept his magical side on a long-term basis. Frankly, what more could a woman want? Sara’s relationship with Neol is a bit unconventional because of his supernatural abilities, but they’re able to work through all the strangeness by opening up to each other and talking things out.
I enjoyed all the supporting characters as well. By introducting Neol’s Navajo cousins Tse, Shadi and Nascha, it’s obvious that Ms. De Sues has hopes of turning this book into a series. Personally, I so lost myself in Neol's world of Navajo shapeshifters that I eagerly await sequels in this very promising paranormal series.
