Take one evil demon out for blood and a horde of soulless tulpas created to do his bidding, add three ancient reincarnated souls and enough powerful magic to make your hair stand on end, and you have Soulless by Robin Leigh Miller.

Two steps ahead of the law, tulpa slayer Quinn Hurst works alone and quickly, her stay anywhere short and beneath the radar of those around her.  She doesn’t attract attention, and she doesn’t do relationships – of any kind.  Imagine the turmoil she’s thrust into when she’s compelled to take in Tyson, a runaway street-wise teen with the soul of an ancient priest.  Like a snowball rolling downhill, she keeps gathering cohorts as she and Ty join forces with handsome hard-bodied Garen Snyder and the Ross family – Ruth, Donald and their Abby Sciuto (NCIS) lookalike daughter, Tabitha.  Suddenly, way too many people have wormed their way into Quinn’s life and are asking her to stay.

Unfortunately, if she stays, her ugly past – with its one great sin – will catch up to her and ruin the lives of Garen and the others she has come to love as if they were her own family.  She never meant to fall in love with Garen, but theirs is a love fated to be, if only for a short time.  To protect him, she must leave him behind.  And soon.  But first, she and her little band of slayers must figure out some way to vanquish the army of tulpas invading the city, and then take out the demon controlling them.  The very same demon that’s waited an eternity to once again possess Quinn – blood, body and soul.

Garen has no idea why this demon is after Quinn in particular, but he knows that Hell will freeze over before he’ll let that hideous blood-sucking monster have her.  For the first time in this life, he’s found the one woman who completes him, just as she completed him once before.  They belong together, but Garen fears that proving as much to Quinn will be just as difficult as vanquishing the demon and his horde of tulpas.  Can he save Quinn before the demon escapes with her to hell, where it intends to torture her for eternity?  Will Garen’s love for her be enough to bind Quinn to him, or will she run before he can even find out why?

A very talented author, Ms. Miller has written an outstanding and original urban fantasy romance in Soulless.  Her extremely well developed characters – including a brand new kind of antagonist in the tulpa – an intricately written and suspenseful plot, and enough emotion to require Kleenex make this ebook a definite keeper.  I loved Quinn’s strength of character, her determination and most of all, her tireless desire to protect those she loved, even in the face of horrendous torture.  Garen is her equal in every way possible, a strong man able to love with such a profound intensity that at times it took my breath away.  The flashbacks to their past lives together and the dual body sharing in the present revealed a depth to their love that I’ve rarely seen between the main characters of a romance novel.  Although the love scenes between them ranged from intense to rough, they certainly weren’t out of place, considering the danger they faced in their everyday lives.

I sincerely hope Ms. Miller has future slayer books planned for both Tabitha and Tyson.  In this reviewer’s humble opinion, these two engaging characters definitely warrant happy endings of their very own.
