Sarah has traveled back in time to 1858 for the TDC (Time Displacement Corps) and was left forgotten for ten years. Not a girl to mope and whine, she has put the time to good use. After buying a small plantation and hiring workers who would otherwise be sold as slaves, Sarah has become a pillar of the community and a friend to those she employs. Meanwhile, the TDC sends the handsome Matthew Barrington to bring Sarah back to her own time. The attraction between them begins immediately, but alas, after mishaps and some skullduggery by those she thought she could trust, Sarah ends up back in 1858 without Matthew. Sarah, however, isn’t the kind of woman to give up easily. Ms. Stephans has created a wonderful heroine in Sarah. Full of moxie and determination, yet generous and kind, Sarah prepares her workers for the impending American Civil War by sewing gold coins in their undergarments and providing them with information about safe places to go. In her book, The Time Displacement Corps Book One: Sarah’s Story, Ms. Stephans provides the reader with plenty of humor and gives a delightful look into pre-Civil War history with a fresh voice. I’m still not certain what the purpose of the Time Displacement Corps is but, perhaps in the next installment, Ms. Stephans will clarify their purpose. My only disappointment was that I had hoped Sarah would send all her freed slaves into the future to escape the hardships they would most likely encounter during the war. This in no way detracted from the wonderful and surprising end. Truly a delightful tale that anyone who loves time travel and romance would thoroughly enjoy. |
