Bryl R. Tyne’s Best Unspoken occurs on Levi’s 25th birthday. He is living with Robert, a 44-year old, however, Rob doesn’t talk much which unsettles Levi’s mother. Levi only wants to live his life without his mother interfering. So with this in mind, Rob takes Levi to Wilde’s, a gay gentleman’s club, for his birthday. Levi meets up with some friends who also don’t understand Levi’s attraction for Rob. As Levi celebrates his birthday, Rob gets jealous of some the attention paid to Levi and takes him out of the club and to a hotel where they have a night of hot sex. But what is the relationship between Levi and Rob? Is it one of domination or equality? Does Rob ever speak more than a few words? While the story may be Levi’s, since it is told in Levi’s first person voice, Rob is dominant. You get to know Rob through the other characters in Best Unspoken --their words and their reactions to him. Rob is not a sweet character and does not set out to make anyone like him. But, like Levi, I knew what Rob liked because of how Tyne portrayed him. I also found the ending different and unexpected. After their abrupt departure from the club, I expected a rougher ending. I never expected Levi’s words and actions but they worked. I enjoyed this story and will read more of Bryl R. Tyne. |
