Titus Drusus Latinius is a roman soldier. It is 378AD and he is trapped in a ditch watching his friend Stabo die while the Goths beat the Romans in this war. He is praying he can be found so his best friend can be saved. He is found by a Goth named Theodoric. He doesn’t understand why Theo saves him, not his friend, but he has no choice but to go with the Goth. Theo saved Drusus because he could not bear to watch the handsome Roman die. His best friend, Gregoric, is with the Roman's best friend Stabo hoping to save the badly beaten Roman from death. These four are on opposite sides of war, but end up drawn together having their lives intertwined. Can love over come years of war and hatred? Jardonn Smith has a rich tale of history and love in Danube Divide. I loved the blend of the historical in this novel. I loved the tales of the Goth culture and Roman blended very well in this story. I did find the use of first person confusing in this story. The first half is told in first person from Theo’s point of view. Then it is first person from Gregoric’s point of view, and then it intertwines to both of them being I. Made my head spin a little to keep track of who the “I” was. The heat between the characters is searing the chemistry off the charts. I highly recommend this novel to someone who has the time to really read a good story. This is not a light, one night read. I hope to read more from Mr. Smith in the future if Danube Divide is anything to go by, they are sure to be worth reading. |
