After five years of being away from Saint Amour, Andrew “Andy” Payne is coming home. He and his sister are in trouble – his sister has shot his stepfather and they are not sure if he is dead or alive, so to be sure they are returning home. Jebediah Law is the deputy and he and Andy were once lovers but Andy’s mysterious and furtive departure in the middle of the night broke off what they had. Now that Jeb has had a chance to see Andy again, Jeb is certain the feelings are still there and burning brightly. However, the closer Jeb gets to Andy, the more he learns about why Andy left and the danger he now faces. Can Jeb save Andy and his sister from a mad man?  Can they find the love they once had with a secret between them?

Lawless is a complicated story with many layers. Flesa Black does an amazing job bringing on the emotion to the surface of the story. Andy is a psychologist and he has been taking care of his sister since she was thirteen. His stepfather was molesting his siter, so one night Andy gets her out of Saint Amour and forces his stepfather to let Andy adopt her. The siblings start over fresh, only to be brought back home by the very man that they both fear. Jeb uses Andy at first to satisfy a lust he cannot ignore, but the more he delves into Andy he finds the heart of the love he still feels for Andy. He has a huge heart and Andy has always had a place in it. Lawless is a complicated but beautiful read I completely enjoyed.
