Ten years ago, ordinary citizen Sera Ayers fell madly in love with Ash Walker, the dashing darling of upper society. Believing their love would be enough, she foolishly thought he’d defy his prominent family and marry her. Learning through the grapevine he was scheduled to marry a society deb and would soon offer her the choice to become his mistress, she left their relationship with her pride in tatters. Over the years, she buried her sorrow within her career, moving through the ranks of the Federation United Forces. She’s proud of her status, holding a prominent position within the Federation. Called by her superiors to undergo a dangerous covert mission, she has no idea she will be teamed, not only with Ash, but another upper society member, Brandt Pela. The Federation wants her to pose as the concubine of one of these men and garner intelligence to subvert a plot to bring down the government. Can Sera subjugate herself, not only to Ash, but Brandt as well? Will she complete this mission with her heart intact?

Undercover by Lauren Dane is a gripping sci-fi mystery set in a futuristic world. I soon became lost in Sera’s universe, learning about subtle distinctions within this classed society. I couldn’t help but admire Sera’s spunk in Undercover. Her intrepid use of the societal customs in garnering vital information for the mission was a sight to behold. While working on this assignment, Sera has to reconcile her lingering feelings towards Ash. When Sera gave her heart and soul to Ash so many years ago, she became his sexual submissive in every sense of the word. They shared so many intimate moments together as Dom and sub. Finding out about his engagement shattered her trust of men so much she’s not had a relationship since then. She was utterly humiliated in the public eye and decided to focus on her career. I don’t know if I would have been as hospitable about meeting Ash again. In my opinion, she should have made this cocky Dom sweat a little more before she succumbed to his advances.

Ash, for his part, has never forgotten his beloved Sera. Marrying under duress, bending to family pressure, he was bitterly unhappy and divorced his spouse a few years after their marriage. He hasn’t had a significant relationship since Sera, preferring to engage in a homo-erotic relationship with Brandt. Knowing he will be on the mission with Sera, Ash uses this to his advantage, wanting desperately for Sera’s forgiveness and hoping to rekindle those fires. Brandt enters the mix and quickly feels the same way about Sera as Ash does. This complicates things as a former couple quickly escalates into a triad engaging in sexual games involving dominance and submission. The D/s scenes in Undercover have a lyrical quality about them, which displays Lauren Dane’s ability to craft sexual situations that make sense matched with her characters’ psyches. I rooted for all three of these characters, hoping that, by the book’s end, they would make their joining a permanent reality. Don’t miss Undercover, a saucy blend of D/s elements within a sci-fi setting.
