Ali Whitmore is suffering from a broken heart after ending her relationship with her long-time boyfriend, Trey Monahan. Her best friend, Beth, notices her weight loss and angst, and suggests Ali go to a Halloween masquerade ball to get out of her funk. Ali reluctantly agrees, pouring all her energy into an elaborate costume. Will Ali find someone new at the party? Unmask Me by Kat Bishop is a tightly written story of love lost and found. Ms. Bishop gives us two very believable characters in Ali and Trey, who both want something different at first. Who can blame Ali really for wanting to avoid entanglements after being with her ex for three years and finding him incapable of commitment? She’s right to move on with her life, but finds she’s miserable with the prospect. Trey never realized what Ali meant to him until she was gone, which leaves him vowing to get her back, whatever the cost. Trey’s pursuit of Ali was thoroughly enjoyable, especially watching Trey work his magic on Ali and making her feel like the special woman she is. I enjoyed Unmask Me and wonder what Ms. Bishop will write next. |
