There is a saying: Every male or female has gay tendencies deep inside, but would never admit it. This is what FBI agent Alex Ware is facing. Alex and his partner, Aussie-born Shawn Matthews, are agents in deep cover working on a case involving an international arms dealer. The arms dealer, James “The Jam” Ronnecker, happens to be gay and only trusts gay customers. In order to gain the dealer’s confidence, the two agents have to prove convincingly to Ronnecker that they are gay or Ronnecker will kill them on the spot, plain and simple. Shawn Matthews has no problem performing in front of Ronnecker because he's bi. Also, unbeknownst to Alex, Shawn has a secret crush on his partner and this situation allows him to realize the fantasy he has been having of making love to Alex. There is only one problem -- Alex is straight. Considering their lives depend on it and with a little acting, Alex gives in and allows himself to be “seduced” by Shawn. The case is solved and both agents are back to a normal life, ready to take on their next assignment. This poses another problem: Alex had been thinking a lot about the love scene they performed in front of Ronnecker. The fact is Alex really did enjoy the little tryst with Shawn when they were undercover. Now, he is fighting his own demons. At one point, he tells himself, I am fighting what is left in my life: my heart and my sanity. Will it be his sanity, trying to convince himself he is not bi, or will it be his heart because, deep inside, he really loves Shawn. TD McKinney illustrates the fact it doesn’t matter whether a person is gay or straight. What’s important in life is love conquers all, and the author expresses this adoringly as A Matter of Necessity relates the bond between Alex and Shawn. TD McKinney shows the two main characters as real people and, just like any couple, they love, protect each other, fight, make-up, and love again. The sex scenes are implied rather than graphic. This is not necessarily bad. The author demonstrates that a novel doesn’t always have to have obligatory sex in every chapter. Hugging and kissing can be even more titillating. It also reveals the genuine love Alex and Shawn have for each other and is more realistic. |
