 | Title: Revenge of the Court Jester Author: Kate Hill Publisher: Ellora's Cave Genre: Vampire Publication date: September 2006 ISBN: 1-4199-0667-4 Pages: 189 Series: Ancient Blood | Sadavis Baptista is an undercover agent for the Network, the organization designed to bring about a better world for humanity and vampires. His dedication is so intense that he has quickly became a top operative and one much in demand. His current case involves infiltrating an agency of vampire hunters, so he has had to pose as human. Although his infiltration is successful, he is scarred by one of the hunters using a platinum-blade knife, which is too effective against vampire kind. He has been exposed for so long to the Humans’ Disease that he must be taken off field work against the vampire hunters. Esmeralda is a relatively new Chronicler for the Network and accompanies her good friend Dulcie to a vampire boxing café where Dulcie’s husband, Dr. Matthew, is singing. She meets a stunningly well-built boxer with a face resembling a bad Halloween production and incredibly intense magnetic pull of psychic energy. Introduced to Sadavis, who boxes under the title Court Jester to match his startling tattoo, she is both immediately captivated and immediately lusting. Sadavis embraces the concept of Court Jester because of their hideous faces matched with prime physiques and a sarcastic sense of humour, mirroring his own life. His sense of mystery and ancient power intrigues Esmeralda, as she intrigues him. Kate Hill cannot write books that don’t immediately captivate her readers, and Revenge of the Court Jester is a fine example. From the first sentences, the reader is catapulted into the story of Sadavis, whose dedication and integrity of character is so intense as to make him a perfect Alpha hero. Esmeralda is a woman with drive and dreams who demonstrates sufficient quality of character to recognize true worth when she finds it, irregardless of its packaging. Ms. Hill also delivers a number of secondary characters who are effective foils for the main protagonists, such has Dr. Matthew Winter and his wife Dulcie, and the shallow ex-chronicler-apprentice Khrissa.
