Morgan Cutter is the chief of police in tiny White Tail, Texas, a place he grew up in and plans to call home for the rest of his life. Years ago, he locked up his heart after his conniving, city-bred wife of three months ditched him with a vicious farewell note, and he’s sworn off relationships - especially with city gals – ever since. Trouble is, his brother’s new lady has a very appealing girl friend named Allison Moore and he feels a strong pull of attraction from the second he lays eyes on her. He knows she’s a big city girl with no intention of settling for small town life. So what’s a tongue-tied, once burned, lonely guy to do?

Cutter’s Law is Judith Rochelle’s sequel to Love with a Proper Rancher but it can certainly be read on its own. It’s basically the tale of two total opposites finding themselves attracted to each other and how they eventually find enough common ground from where to fall in love. Morgan and Allison make an odd, mismatched couple; a bit like Beauty and the Incredible Hulk. Morgan Cutter is a big, taciturn hunk of a man still reeling from the emotional devastation of his wife’s cruel desertion. His skills in wooing the opposite sex are pretty minimal at best. Allison Moore, on the other hand, is a party type; a fun loving, outgoing woman who craves the bright lights and non-stop excitement of the big city. Although she recognizes Morgan has ‘good potential,’ his quiet nature and deep mistrust of women makes forming any kind of meaningful relationship with him an uphill climb.

At first, I couldn’t believe these two would ever find enough in common to make a go of it (besides lots of hot sex of course) but the author allows Morgan and Allison to evolve naturally until I couldn’t imagine them not being together. Cutter’s Law is more than just a love story however, as it morphs into a tale of suspense after a stranger’s dead body is dumped outside of town, igniting a chain of events that no one in White Tail could have predicted. I think you’ll find Cutter’s Law a very entertaining read.
