It seems the more things change the more they stay the same. People are still, even in the future, looking for that thrill when it comes to sex. One dramatic change did come with the breakthrough in the medical field that enabled immortals to have sex with humans. When that happened the game was on. Immortals brought a whole new outlook and excitement to the game and the stakes (pardon the pun) were raised. With the bar up a notch and sex for hire no longer taboo, the next logical step would be for vampires to add their special talents in the sex for hire arena. Known for their stunning looks and lasting endurance it only makes sense and business is thriving.

Detective Tess Monterey is going to learn all about this new player in the sex for hire business as she investigates an alleged sex slaying. With the victim totally drained of blood, all the evidence is pointing right now to the vampire sector of the business. Devante Matiero works for Blood Bytes, the top vampire escort agency. He’s not only their most sought after escort; he is also the last one to be with the victim and is fast becoming the top suspect. Tess can certainly understand why he is as popular as he is from the way her own libido is overacting just talking to him. What Tess doesn’t understand is why someone like Devante would be in this profession. Something just doesn’t fit and until she can put her finger on it she is going to keep searching for the answers she needs to close this investigation. Tess may try to ignore it but she has got it bad for Devante. Tess is playing with fire unless she can get proof Devante isn’t the murderer, and if she doesn’t she is playing right into his hands.

Devante knows that Detective Monterey, Tess, has an opinion of the profession he’s in and an opinion about him. After all these years you would think by now he really wouldn’t care what others, especially humans, think of him. But for some reason, Tess’ opinion does matter to him. As the evidence is mounting and not in his favor, it’s going to take more than smooth talking to clear his name and his reputation. Right now Devante has to make sure Detective Monterey doesn’t get too close – not all of his secrets are ready to be exposed. At least not until he has a chance to prove himself in all the ways the detective is thinking about.

Blood Bytes by Susan Phelan had my heart pumping, that’s for sure. If it got any hotter I think the smoke alarms in my house would start singing. The future sounds pretty great if you can meet the likes of Devante Matiero in it. I really enjoyed this futuristic vampire tale. It looks as if no matter what’s in store for us in the future, vampires and their allure is still the same. Blood Bytes had my “undying” (sorry couldn’t help it) attention and I am sure it will do the same for you. Yum, good to the last drop.
