Lexie has been lonely ever since she had to move to the big city to find work. She desperately misses her small town, her deceased mom, even her old neighbors. She wonders if she’ll ever be happy living in the big, impersonal city. Working as a physical therapist in an old folks’ home, she befriends an anxious new resident, Pearl. Pearl’s old neighbor, Kevin (a good looking young man about Lexie’s age), helps the old woman get settled in her new apartment at the home and reaches out to Lexie. Susan Lyons’ very short story, A Man Mom Would Love, might be diminutive but it’s long on sentiment. In its 18 brief pages it manages to bring out a myriad of themes any reader can identify with: grappling with the loss of loved ones, trying to adjust to entirely new circumstances, showing compassion in the face of indifference, making new friends and most of all, learning what’s really important in life. There are just three characters in this story: Lexie, the old woman Pearl, and Kevin. The interaction between the three is very believable as the story unfolds. A Man Mom Would Love isn’t a love story per se, it’s more a tale of life’s possibilities and it’s well worth reading. |
