Maymon is a pirate who captained his own boat, Jamaican Maid, at a young age having been voted into the Captain position when the last Captain of the Jamaican Maid died eight years ago. He was taught by his Indian mother to worship the Cemi who are gods of the afterlife. Maymon’s unusual beliefs cause discord amongst his men leading to a shift in power and the overtaking of his ship. The men are tired of watching their Captain throw a portion of their hard earned swag into the ocean to appease the gods each and every time they plunder and pillage. One day Maymon woke to find those most loyal to him being slaughtered. Worse yet, he found himself shackled to a barrel and thrown into a sea of hungry sharks. Talos is an Oracan bounty hunter. His race is humanoid but they have a reptilian body with a thick grey hide which burns most humans on touch. Extremely sensitive boney knobs extend up their chest and on their heads and four inch bone spikes protrude from their shoulders and forearms, at will. The Oracans are an honorable race of bounty hunters and warriors that are known throughout their galaxy as peacekeepers. Agustus Barlow is an antiques dealer with a reputation for being underhanded with harsh yet effective business methods. He convinced the High Council that saving Maymon so he could lead Barlow to his long lost treasure would be in the Council’s best interest. Barlow owns the map but needs Maymon to interpret it. Talos agrees to take the Hunt despite his dislike and distrust of Barlow. Oracans do not usually hunt for live bounty as it is inhumane and has led to problems in the past. Humans are Talos favorite species to study, so off he goes to pluck this plundering pirate from certain underwater death. Placing this 1769 pirate into a space setting made for a very funny, entertaining, interesting, read. Maymon’s old-world way of speaking in this futuristic world is hysterical and very well written. Maymon’s reactions to his new environment are funny, touching and very believable. As this unlikely pair form an unbreakable bond of friendship and love you can’t help but love them both. Laura Baumbach did a wonderful job of portraying the mayhem, mishaps, and adventures of this interspecies relationship. What a fun book for anyone interested in a futuristic interspecies love story. |
