Wealthy industrialist heiress Samantha Wheeler has not been excluded from the griefs of life. Eight months after losing her parents to a fatal overseas plane crash, her fiance dies in an auto accident in Canada. On the first anniversary of her parents' deaths, alone and nearly friendless, Samantha stumbles into a blue collar bar, not realising it is gay. There she is befriended by J. C. Markin, a young Lesbian who becomes Samantha's close friend, and for five years, her secret lover.

J. C.'s alcoholism rules her life and eventually Samantha cannot tolerate it, nor J. C.'s insecurity when Samantha continues to refuse to enter into a commitment. When a night's blackout following a final fight with Samantha leaves J. C. waking up in jail, charged with the murder of her only other friend, the operator of the bar, J. C. finally realises she has truly hit bottom. Eventually sobering up improves her character and disposition, but it doesn't alter the fact that she's been framed. Now it is J. C. who refuses to continue the sexual relationship with Samantha as long as Samantha still can't commit.

The Silent Cry is a heartrending story of two women who love each other but suffer each from serious issues. In the near background stands a third woman, Jordan, a socialite acquaintance of Samantha's who is determined to destroy J. C. if that is what's required to remove her from Samantha's sphere. Kira Chase continues to demonstrate her accustomed skill at developing intriguing female characters, and pitting their tensions against each other and against current society, keeping the reader's attention riveted.
